Living with Pollution

The concept of having a trunk road passing through the centre of a village, town or city has long since been recognized as an antisocial unacceptable practice. Ring roads or bypass roads have been built in many places to restore the quality of life to the residents of that area.

Like it or not we have built a road transport based economy and way of life. Our supermarkets, shops and factories are no longer near our railway stations or places of residence. The 44 tonne trucks are our main goods transport system and to turn this around back to rail will take decades. We would have to build new stations, tracks and distribution warehouses and would then need to get many goods back onto road transport to reach their destination.
