Anger At Bypass Recommendation

All the elected representatives of the villages of Mottram, Hollingworth and Tintwistle have expressed their anger at the decision made by 4NW to recommend to the North West Development Agency that the funding for the Bypass is deferred until 2016.

Following this decision the Highways Agency have withdrawn from the adjourned public inquiry and re-start statutory processes, subject to further advice to ministers by 4NW.

For the past 30 years the need to rid the villages of the horrendous traffic problems has been recognised but time and time again those responsible for making the decision to go ahead with the relief road have backed away from taking the steps needed to find a solution for the problem. Read More

The A57/A628 Mottram Bypass has been desperately needed, yet always deferred, for decades now. Currently it is one of the most congested A-road routes in the country, with high volumes of traffic (including HGVs) using a road which is totally unsuitable for the volume and nature of traffic it carries. Passing in places within a meter of houses and shops, it is particularly dangerous for pedestrians. Between 2000 and 2004 there were 82 accidents on this stretch of road, including 2 fatalities. The Highways Agency itself has concluded that there is no realistic alternative to a bypass, yet despite this, funding has been put back to 2010/2011. This is simply unacceptable as this Bypass isn't just needed now, it has been badly needed for decades.

ARE YOU CONCERNED?

Both the doctors at the Smithy Surgery and the Governors at Hollingworth Primary School have submitted their concerns about the dangers to the health of all residents and pupils caused by the slow moving traffic to the Bypass Public Inquiry. We are campaigning for the bypass to relieve our villages of this curse. If you want to help us in any way or have any ideas on what action can be taken, then please contact us via the Bypassnow09 email below.
